Geoff Molson on accelerating the Habs' rebuild.

The owner speaks out.

The Montreal Canadiens made a major overhaul of both their front office and their roster over the course of the 2021 - 2022 regular season and the subsequent offseason. It would be an understatement to suggest that both general manager Kent Hughes and executive vice president Jeff Gorton have put their stamp on the team, but the reality is that there is still a lot of work to be done moving forward.

In a hockey market as intense as Montreal, fans are not always willing to be patient and this is a reality that teams like the Canadiens must contend with. On Monday, while the Canadiens were introducing their new jerseys, their new captain, and their new alternate captains, Habs owner Geoff Molson was asked about the possibility of accelerating what is clearly a rebuild from his new management team and he gave about as clear of an answer as you could have expected.

"Do I want things to go faster is the question," said Molson when asked on Monday. "I believe that we have to take the time necessary to reach our goals and to have a winning team for the long term. So I'm not in any hurry. I think it's important to give flexibility to Geoff, Kent and Martin, to prepare over the course of the next few years to have a good team for a long time."

The comments from Molson today will likely please the diehard fans of the franchise. Many believe there is still plenty of work to be done and with players like Evgeni Dadonov, Jake Allen, Sean Monahan, Jonathan Drouin and Paul Byron all potentially coming off the books at the conclusion of next season, it may very well be that Hughes and Gorton are just in the early stages of their plan to shape the future of the Canadiens to their vision.

You can listen to Geoff Molson's comments on the topic in the short video below, which he made in French during a bilingual media availability on Monday. Molson came off as sincere during his comments and even went on to reiterate his thoughts as if to truly drive the point home.
