The Colorado Avalanche made two gambles prior to the National Hockey League trade deadline and with them missing the playoffs altogether it's easy to say that those gambles did not pay off.

Just how bad those gambles were was revealed today however when Joe Sakic revealed that both Mikkael Bodker and Shawn Matthias had informed him through their representatives that they would be testing free agency and not re-signing with Colorado before July 1st.

“I did speak with both representatives. They’re going to test the open market and see what’s out there,” Sakic said as per Mike Chambers of the Denver Post. “I’d like to have one back for sure, or both, but we’ll see where that goes. They have the right to test it, so they’re going to do that. We’ll revisit that early July.”

It's particularly tough for Colorado as both players seemed to fit very well in their system with Matthias greatly stepping up his production with 6 goals and 5 assists in 20 games, compared to 6 goals and 11 assists in 51 games with Toronto, and Boedker putting up 4 goals and 8 assists in just 18 games.

It seems unlikely that either player returns to the Avalanche although it's not impossible.
