The Boston Bruins will spend at least this next season mulling over their options for captaincy.

GM Don Sweeney confirmed to the media today that the team will start the season without a captain.

"Everything's on the table right now," Sweeney told Bruins insider Conor Ryan this morning. To be honest with everybody, we're gonna start the year without (a captain). We've got a leadership group that's been leading amongst themselves and I think eventually somebody will emerge as the guy that should be the next captain. It comes with a lot of responsibility so I'd like to see more of an organic, natural progression of it."

Sweeney would go on to explain that he wants the team to get their feet under new head coach Marco Sturm before making any firm decisions.

"There's a new coach... if we pick somebody and not everybody's on the same page it can become awkward," Sweeney said. "I think for now we just move forward with the leadership group that we've established and let Marco (Sturm) have his own communication with them and let them have communication with themselves in terms of what direction they want to take this team and who ultimately emerges as the next captain of the Boston Bruins."

One thing's clear, whoever emerges as the Bruins' next captain will their work cut out for them. Taking the torch over from Brad Marchand, Patrice Bergeron and Zdeno Chara will not be an easy task...
