The Toronto Maple Leafs are reportedly among the teams monitoring New Jersey Devils defenseman Dougie Hamilton as a potential trade target. The veteran blueliner, with two years remaining on his $9 million per season contract, has been at the center of hot speculation recently, raising questions about his future in New Jersey.

According to TSN insider Pierre LeBrun, the Maple Leafs are considered a “potential fit” for Hamilton. LeBrun notes the Devils are still focused on finding a trade that works for all parties, but Hamilton’s contract complicates things.

“With the Leafs, I think there’s no question they’re not taking him at $9 million a year; the Devils would have to retain,” he explained. Other teams like Carolina are also in the mix.

The potential move makes sense for Toronto, especially with Chris Tanev sidelined long-term due to injury that could require surgery. Hamilton would add size, experience, and puck-moving ability to a Leafs defense in need of reinforcement as they push toward the playoffs. And the guy desperately needs a new start…

That said, the question remains: at what cost? Trading promising prospects like Ben Danford could raise eyebrows, especially since Easton Cowan is having a strong rookie season. With just under $4 million in cap space, Toronto could open room by placing Tanev on long-term injured reserve, but the organization has yet to make that call.

Hamilton, who will turn 33 this June, brings a blend of offensive skill and playoff experience, but Toronto would have to weigh the value of short-term gains against the potential long-term cost. As the trade deadline approaches and the Olympic break looms, Maple Leafs fans will be watching closely to see if management decides to “go big or go home.”
