Talks with the Toronto Maple Leafs were friendly earlier this week for pending free agent goalie Jack Campbell, but unproductive. The veteran goalie is set to become an unrestricted free agent in the next few hours after completing a two-year, $3.3 million deal he signed with the Los Angeles Kings in September of 2019.

And according to insider Kevin Weekes, Campbell is closing in a potential five-year, $5 million AAV with the Edmonton Oilers.

The Oilers jumped on board the Campbell sweepstakes early in the offseason when veteran goalie Mike Smith later landed on the long-term injured reserve in Edmonton.

With Mikko Koskinen out of the picture for the Oilers, the quest for a new starting goalie became a crucial offseason point.

GM Ken Holland might have landed one of the best free agents in between the pipes if the deal comes together once the market opens at noon today.

Campbell had a 31-9-6 record last season with a .914 save percentage and 2.64 goals-against average.
