Several playoff contenders are still exploring the goalie market leading up to the March 8 trade deadline, but suddenly on Wednesday, another option became available on waivers.

It was confirmed that the Philadelphia Flyers have placed netminder Cal Petersen on waivers.

The 29-year-old goalie was acquired by Philadelphia this past summer when the Los Angeles Kings look to make a salary dump in a three-team trade also involving the Columbus Blue Jackets, many players and prospects. In his previous five NHL seasons with the Kings, he had a .905 save percentage and 2.92 goals-against average. He was selected in the fifth round. 129th overall during the 2013 NHL Entry Draft by the Buffalo Sabres, but did not appear in a game with the organization at the NHL level, before he moved on to Los Angeles.

Petersen last suited up for the Flyers in their recent 7-6 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Sunday, turning aside 25 of 32 shots. Petersen has appeared in only three games since returning to the NHL in late January, going 1-1-0 and giving up 11 goals on 65 shots. He has recorded a GAA of 3.90 and a .864 save percentage in five games so far this season, his first with the team.

It is clear that the Flyers and general manager Daniel Briere are trusting Samuel Ersson for the No. 1 job in the crease once it became clear that Carter Hart was no longer in the club’s future plans with the ongoing legal investigation in the 2018 sex assault case.
