Goalie taken out by a huge hit in the SJHL.

A young goaltender has been the victim of a rather ugly looking hit in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League.

A video published late last night on Youtube shows a short segment of a game contested between the Melville Millionaires and Yorkton Terriers. Now the two teams are within very close proximity of one another and have had a heated rivalry as a result, but what happened during the video clearly shocked even the most die hard members of both fan bases that were in attendance.

In the video Yorkton Terriers forward Greg Mulhall creates a great turnover in his own zone and blows past the Millionaires defense to create a breakaway opportunity for himself. Unfortunately for Mulhall however upon creating the turnover he also sent the puck ahead of him down the ice, and that was the moment went Millionaires goaltender Berk Berkeliev saw his chance to make a play on the puck. A race between the goaltender and the forward ensued, but it was that race that would end in catastrophe for Berk Berkeliev.

It was very clear that Berkeliev beat Mulhall to the puck on the play, in fact the goalie even had a chance to send the puck up the ice before Mulhall got there, but the Terriers' forward was clearly furious at his missed opportunity. Instead of slowing his momentum and giving up on the play, the 19 year old Terriers' forward lowered his shoulder and drilled Berkeliev in the head with a devastating hit. The reaction from the crowd was instantaneous and now doubt Mulhall, who was ejected from the game for intent to injure, will be on the receiving end of a hefty suspension for this play.

Unfortunately it appears as though Berkeliev was badly shaken up on the play. The 18 year old goaltender took the shot to the head and crumpled to the ice in a heap, and he did not appear to move again before the end of the video shared on Youtube. It appears as though he is out cold on the ice as trainers and teammates rush over to check on him, but we have been unable to find any confirmation regarding his status at this time.

Here's the video and you can judge the play for yourself.
