The veteran netminder is on the move.
This just in, the Chicago Blackhawks have traded 32 year old goaltender Laurent Brossoit and former 2021 1st round selection Nolan Allan along with a 7th round pick to the San Jose Sharks for veteran defenseman Ryan Ellis, 21 year old prospect Jake Furlong and a 4th round draft pick.
From NHL insider Elliotte Friedman:
Here's the thing... Ellis, of course, will never play an NHL game again. He's been on long-term injury reserve for nearly five years now and hasn't played a game since 2021. He's in year 7 of an 8 year deal that pays him $6.25 million annually and he's essentially just an insurance claim at this point.
UPDATE: The deal is now official.
Brossoit is ready to return to NHL action, but the Blackhawks have a pretty crowded crease with the likes of Spencer Knight and Arvid Soderblom up with the big club. By making this move, Blackhawks GM Kyle Davidson gives Brossoit another crack at the NHL while upgrading his team's pick from a 7th to a 4th round selection in a couple years. Sure, it comes at the expense of Allan but the former Stan Bowman 1st round selection wasn't progressing the way the team had hoped.
As it stands, all three players in this deal, save for Ellis, get a fresh start with a new NHL club.
