Goaltender Robert Mayer gives up two brutal goals in a single game.
That's embarrassing.
Every goaltender that has played for any length of time has had nightmares about giving up this kind of goal and, unfortunately for 32 year old veteran goaltender Robert Mayer, those nightmares became a reality twice in one game.
Over the weekend Mayer, who plays for the Langnau Tigers of the Swiss League, coughed up two of the most brutal goals that you're ever going to see and he did so over the course of a single game. It would be easy to mock Mayer in this situation, but to be perfectly honest with you here I felt terrible for the poor guy as everything went wrong for him.
The first bad goal came in the second period and occurred as the result of what was a failed stretch pass down the ice, one that resulted in a bouncing puck with a trajectory pointed straight at Mayer's net. The Czech netminder got his stick ready to grab the puck, likely with the intention of making a pass, but right as he went to scoop it up the puck took a wicked bounce and hopped over his stick.
Mayer could do nothing as the puck crossed the goal line and once it was already in he hung his head in shame, looking down at his stick as though it had betrayed him. Unfortunately for him things would only get worse from there.
In the game's third period Mayer would once again give up a bad goal, this time after a shot from the neutral zone found its way into the back of his net. This time Mayer was expecting a dump in from the neutral zone and misread the play entirely, leaving his net to play a puck in the corner that was never headed in that direction. Mayer quickly tried to alter his direction after realizing that this was no dump in, but it was too late and as a result the puck easily made its way across the goal line.
Even Mayer's anger was wrought with failure, as the understandably frustrated goaltender tried to kick his stick in anger but missed that as well.
