Earlier on Wednesday, the Ottawa Senators were informed by the NHL that they will have to forfeit a first-round pick as a result of punishment stemming from their 2021 trade that sent Evgenii Dadonov to the Vegas Golden Knights and subsequent, invalidated trade that would have sent the forward to the Anaheim Ducks in March 2022.

The Golden Knights decided to make a short statement after the announcement, saying: “We appreciate the league’s diligence on this matter and respect the decision. The club will have no further comment.”

This started off when the Senators traded Dadonov to Vegas in return for defenseman Nick Holden and a third-round pick back in July 2021. Ottawa failed to inform the Golden Knight that Dadonov had a 10-team no-trade clause, which caused trouble at the 2022 trade deadline, and therefore the Senators are dealing with the consequences.

Ahead of the 2022 trade deadline, the Golden Knights traded Dadonov and a second-round pick to the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for defenseman John Moore and Ryan Kesler’s contract. The deal was however cancelled by the NHL two days later because the Ducks were one of the teams on Dadonov’s no-trade list and the trade could not be finalized.

When Vegas made the short statement, fans quickly attacked the team for their involvement in the messy situation. Some slammed the defending Stanley Cup champions on X, formerly known as Twitter:

You have to admit some fans are pretty adamant that this is all the Golden Knights's fault, though really, you cannot blame Vegas for flagging the aborted trade down to the NHL... They needed to make a move to build the roster they had in place for the franchise's first championship and it certainly could not have taken place without moving Dadonov's salary.

The Golden Knights will face the Senators for the first time this season on December 17th in Vegas. I guess we will see if these angry get some revenge and if the saying is true in this case that "snitches get stitches" ... However, Pierre Dorion won't be around since he parted ways with the team later on Wednesday.
