Gretzky on fighting: “It's not really part of our game anymore.”

It's not often The Great One will say anything that would get hockey fans ticked. It may have happened this time, though. In a new interview with TMZ, Wayne Gretzky was asked about fighting in the game and whether it still had a place. While no.99 clearly avoided saying he thought fighting needed to get the boot, he did pass it off as something that likely won't be around much longer.

"It's not in there very much anymore," said Gretzky, when asked about fighting in the NHL. "It's kind of out of hockey now, so. It's going to be happen every now and then."

The NHL's all-time goals, assists and points leader was then asked if he could foresee a time when chucking the nucks was banned completely at the NHL level.

"You never know, but there's less and less fights every year, you know. Kids grow up now and nobody fights. The old days they used to fight at 15, 18 , 20, now they all grow up and nobody fights. So, you've cleaned it out of minor hockey, junior hockey, college hockey, it's not really part of our game anymore."

And that's where the interview ended, with the greatest hockey player who ever lived (statistically speaking) stating that fighting is not a part of the game of hockey any longer.

While fights may not take place as often as they once did, there have been quite a few of them this season. The referees seem to jump in much more quickly than they did in the past, though. As for fighting no longer being a part of the sport, we're going to disagree with The Great One here and say it'll be around for a while yet.
