Grim update on William Nylander's negotiations with Maple Leafs

Look away, Leafs fans.

It's going to be one of the biggest storylines this season for the Toronto Maple Leafs, and it could all be coming to a head before too long.

Forward William Nylander's current contract is up next summer, and general manager Brad Treliving is going to be tasked with not only trying to keep him around, but fellow star Auston Matthews, who will find himself in the same boat.

But right now, it appears as though just about nothing is working on Toronto's end to facilitate a new deal for Nylander. According to reports, Nylander is seeking at least $10 million a season in his new deal, and reportedly is not interested in taking a discount in order to help out the team and their already extremely tight salary cap situation.

Meanwhile, Elliott Friedman is of the view that both Nylander and the Leafs are in a standoff, with neither side willing to be the one that blinks first.

"I think that's kind of at a standstill," Friedman said on Tuesday of the negotiations with Nylander. "I think that they aren't close. Unless someone really budges (on) their position, that one is going to stay at a standstill."

"I think the issue there from Nylander is if other players aren't going to take a little bit less (money) to win there (in Toronto), then I don't think that he's going to, either," Friedman said of Matthews, tossing another monkey wrench into the spokes of Treliving.

Leafs fans, just who will get their contract done first, if at all?
