As criticism of Larkin intensifies, some people are reminding fans that there's a human being behind the trade saga, and that personal attacks have gone too far.
The Dylan Larkin situation in Detroit has become one of the most polarizing stories in the NHL this season. The former Red Wings captain is sitting out while awaiting a trade, and the rumour mill continues to churn with potential destinations and offers coming in. On top of all that, there is chatter about how people are treating the man at the center of it all.
Ever since he asked for a trade out, Larkin has heard the criticism and the boos. It got worse earlier this week when he officially quit, saying he would sit out until he was traded out of Detroit.
A growing chorus of voices in the hockey community is calling for fans and media members to pump the brakes on the personal attacks directed at Larkin. The 2 Mutts Hockey Podcast published a lengthy statement urging people to remember that Larkin is a human being with a family and a life beyond the rink.
"Dylan Larkin is not a quitter and again he's a human being that deserves respect," the podcast wrote. "Nobody outside Dylan's closest circle truly knows everything he's experienced emotionally throughout this situation."
The statement emphasized that disagreeing with Larkin's decision to stop playing while awaiting a trade is fair, but that attacking his character crosses a line. It also pointed out that Larkin has not yet spoken publicly about his side of the story, and that fans should withhold judgment until he does.
Not everyone agrees with that framing. Ryan O'Hara, a senior reporter for The Hockey News, pushed back sharply, writing, "What about the other human beings on the team? What about their emotions? Give me a break with this rubbish." Others echoed that sentiment, arguing that Larkin's decision to sit out directly impacts his teammates and that accountability should not be dismissed in the name of empathy.
Meanwhile, the trade itself remains unresolved. According to Elliotte Friedman's latest 32 Thoughts column, the Minnesota Wild have put forward what appears to be the strongest offer so far, centred on prospect Danila Yurov, an additional veteran roster player, and what Friedman described as a "Costco of first-round picks." Sources told Daily Faceoff that the Red Wings are being "unrealistic" in their asking price, and the Wild reportedly have little interest in sweetening their bid given Larkin's modest production of two goals and six points through 10 games this season.
The Philadelphia Flyers have also reportedly surfaced as a potential third-party facilitator, willing to absorb salary to help make a deal work. Larkin's full no-movement clause has further complicated matters, as he has reportedly ruled out all Canadian teams, leaving interim GM Shawn Horcoff with limited leverage.
The standoff continues, and so does the debate about how far is too far when it comes to criticizing a player caught in the middle of it. Larkin has yet to share his perspective publicly, and until he does, the loudest voices will keep filling the void.
