Habs and Leafs pick their starting goaltenders for Saturday night.
Leafs and Habs go head to head tonight.
The two biggest hockey teams in Canada are set to go head to head tonight as the Toronto Maple Leafs are set to take on the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday night. In spite of the fact that the teams occupy drastically different positions in the standings the two teams are similar in one way and that is because the biggest question marks when it comes to both these franchises are between the goalposts.
As the Maple Leafs head towards the Stanley Cup playoffs, a position they could secure tonight by taking a win over the Canadiens, there are a number of questions regarding what kind of goaltending they can expect to get in those very same playoffs. Starting goaltender Jack Campbell has not returned to his early season form in his last two outings with a .846 save percentage against the Florida Panthers on April 5th and a .833 save percentage against the Dallas Stars two days later.
Either due to Campbell's performance or due to wanting to give him additional rest prior to the playoffs, it now appears 25 year old Swedish goaltender Erik Kallgren will get another start on Saturday. Campbell would in theory have had 2 days to rest since Thursday's outing against the Stars and the Leafs don't play again until Tuesday when they take on the Buffalo Sabres, but head coach Sheldon Keefe has nonetheless chosen to go with Kallgren tonight as per TSN's Mark Masters.
The Canadiens have questions of their own in net as they head towards the conclusion of a season they would rather soon forget. National Hockey League insider Elliotte Friedman has hinted that star goaltender Carey Price could be traded in the offseason if the Habs can get him back healthy and out on the ice for something of a showcase before the end of regular season, and Price has been showing signs that he could soon return.
That being said if you were hoping to see Carey Price on the ice for the Canadiens this evening you're going to be disappointed, as it will once again be veteran goaltender Jake Allen who backstops the Canadiens against the Maple Leafs as per TVA's Renaud Lavoie.
