On Tuesday, the Montreal Canadiens recalled defenseman Arber Xhekaj from the Laval Rocket ahead of tonight’s home opener against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Xhekaj is not only a great story because he went undrafted to begin his professional career, but also because he gets his name into the NHL record books even before the puck got dropped at center ice in Montreal.
When it was announced earlier on Wednesday that 21-year-old blue liner would be dressed for the contest against Toronto, it was confirmed that Xhekaj became the first player whose surname begins with the letter “X” to appear in an NHL game!
Hence, making history!
Xhekaj spent the past three seasons in the OHL, posting 12 goals and 34 points in 51 games last season with the Hamilton Bulldogs and Kitchener Rangers.
We bet he is ready for more records than just his name now that he’s finally made it into the big league!
