Habs defenseman Guhle gets a skate cut to the face, doesn't even miss a shift

UPDATE: Montreal Canadiens defenseman Kaiden Guhle has returned to action after taking an accidental skate cut to the face during tonight's game against the Calgary Flames.

The 21 year old defender left his team briefly to get medical treatment, but was back to action quickly after missing only a shift or two.

Obviously, with everything we witnessed overseas in the tragic death of Adam Johnson, your mind goes to the worst possible scenario when you see something like this happen. With Guhle returning to action though, it appears that this was just a very close call.

It's only a matter of time though until something catastrophic happens in the NHL though. I'm a firm believer that the league should be mandating the use of cut resistant neck guards and wrist guards as soon as possible. With the way that skates are sharpened these days and with the speed that the game is played at, it only makes sense to have the best protection possible. Accidents happen and they can happen in the blink of an eye.

Again, thankfully it appears that Guhle avoided injury in this case. But this provides us as a hockey culture to once again take a look at the problem in front of us and to come up with some permanent solutions. No one should ever have to suffer through what Adam Johnson and his family, friends and teammates have had to suffer through.

If it's any indication of the severity and location of the cut, Guhle left the ice quickly under his own power. He appeared to take the skate around the mouth area. Stay tuned for an update from the team on his condition, but in the meantime keep him in your thoughts and prayers. With everything that the hockey world has been through regarding skate cuts in the past month, plays like this are more terrifying and sickening than ever.
