Jack Hughes is the son of Montreal Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes and he won’t be playing for dad.

On day 2 of the NHL Draft in Montreal, the center for USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program was selected 51st overall by the Los Angeles Kings.

When his name was called by the Kings, Jack Hughes made his way down and his proud father popped up right from his chair at the Canadiens table to go meet with his family in the stands.

Earlier in 2021-22 when Kent Hughes took over in Montreal, he was asked if he would use his first-round pick to select his son, and many jokes were made about it.

When Kent Hughes had confirmed that his son Jack will not be the first overall pick for Montreal, the younger Hughes wasted no time in responding to his father, via Twitter, by telling him that he is making a serious mistake with this decision.
Montreal selected Juraj Slafkovsky with the first-overall pick of the 2022 NHL Draft. Then with the 33rd pick overall, the first of the second day, the Habs went for Owen Beck.

After his selection, Jack admitted to TSN's John Lu that he knew he wouldn't play for his father.

He made it pretty clear beforehand he was going to avoid (drafting me) at all costs.”

While he knew he wouldn't pick his son, Kent Hughes will see him less now that he moves out West to kick off his career.

And now Hughes joins the Canadiens former GM Marc Bergevin in Los Angeles. "Crazy coincidence" says Jack Hughes.
