The Canadiens are calling up another goaltender ahead of tonight's game.
The Montreal Canadiens have made a change in goal.
According to an official announcement from the team, the Habs have called up goaltender Kaapo Kahkonen ahead of tonight's game against the St. Louis Blues. The move has been made due to the fact that Canadiens goaltender Samuel Montembeault will not be available this evening, with Montembeault sidelined due to an illness.
Montembeault has had some big struggles between the pipes for the Canadiens this season so I don't think this news will be received too poorly. Over 14 games Montembeault has recorded a 3.61 goals against average and an .861 save percentage, a far cry from what you would expect out of an NHL goalie.
That being said Kahkonen is himself having a fairly mediocre season after 9 games in the American Hockey League, with the Finnish netminder recording a 2.81 goals against average and a .895 save percentage for the Laval Rocket this season.
While it might seem likely that it will be Kahkonen who will get the start tonight, the Canadiens have announced the opposite. Dobes was in goal on Saturday night when the Canadiens faced off against the Toronto Maple Leafs and stopped 22 of the 23 shots the Maple Leafs fired in his direction. Going back to Dobes for the second time during back to back games would put him at a higher risk of injury but the Canadiens have announced that he will be in net for tonight's game despite that potential concern.
Dobes has already carried a significant load for the Canadiens this season with Montembeault having a tough start to the campaign, and I can only hope that this isn't asking too much of the young Czech netminder.
