The Montreal Canadiens have just been hit with some truly devastating news on Monday morning.

Canadiens head coach Claude Julien spoke to members of the assembled media on Monday morning and revealed that two of his top forwards, Jonathan Drouin and Paul Byron, have now been ruled out indefinitely as a result of what can only be described as a pair of major injuries. The timing could not be worse for a Habs team that has been pretty hot over their last 10 games with a record of 7 - 1 - 2, a stretch of play that has allowed them to climb into second place in the Eastern Conference Atlantic Division behind only the Boston Bruins.

There was no specific timetable given on the potential return of either player but it definitely sounds like both of these are going to be long term due to the fact that Julien revealed both players would need to go under the knife for corrective surgery. In the case of Jonathan Drouin his injury is to his wrist and he will have his surgery to repair the damage at some point today. Meanwhile in the case of Paul Byron his injury is to his knee and his surgery is scheduled to take place at some point tomorrow. As stated earlier no time frame for the injuries on either player, they have merely been ruled out "indefinitely," however the Habs may provided a better idea of that time frame following the surgeries for each player.

In his first 19 games for the Habs this season Drouin was looking pretty good with 7 goals and 8 assists for a total of 15 points and he boasted a plus minus rating of +4 on the season. His loss will almost certainly be the one most felt by the Habs and if he is out an extended period of time it could very well impact the Canadiens current streak of form.

the loss of Byron will not be much better, however there are some who claimed the speedy 30 year old had lost some of his trademark quickness this season. Byron had 1 goal and 3 assists for a total of 4 points in his 19 regular season games thus far and boasted a plus minus rating of +4 on the season. It is unclear if Byron was dealing with this knee injury for some time, but that would certainly explain why the veteran forward had lost a step.
