Hawks' empty assistant coach spot about to be filled?

After firing Mike Kitchen in dramatic fashion following an early exit in the Playoffs, the Blackhawks are still looking to fill the assistant coach spot for next season. A lot of rumors abounded about the next guy to join the roster, and apparently we may have an answer.

According to reports, Ulf Samuelsson would be close to be named assistant coach by the team's management.

Samuelsson is before anything else a former NHLer who played 1,080 games mostly for the Whalers, Penguins and Rangers. The former defenseman then joined the coaching side of the business, being assistant coach to the Coyotes and the Rangers before taking the head coaching position for the Chalotte Checkers this season. He had a lukewarm 39-29-8 season with the AHL team, but apparently it would be good enough to rejoin the big show.

Samuelsson is known to be a good teacher of the game, having a thorough understanding of the defensive strategies. He could bring an important dimension to the Hawk's defense, which wouldn't be superfluous considering how the season ended.

We will report back with more details when available.
