The KHL is well known for attracting mostly Russian players with big contracts. The marauding tactics often work and lots of former NHL stars play in the league, such as Ilya Kovalchuk, Pavel Datsyuk and until this year, Alexander Radulov

The Hawks are the victims of the KHL now, with a former 109th overall pick deciding to stay in Russia for three more years.

Maxim Shalunov played one year in North America, playing 20 games in the Rockford IceHogs and earning 4 points. He played the last three years with the Novosibirsk Sibir and earned 37 points in 49 games in the 2016-2017 campaign.

At this rate, it will be a while before we see Shalunov skating in the NHL, if he ever does.
