The Chicago Blackhawks have signed defenseman Kyle Cumiskey to a one-year contract, the team announced on Thursday.

It is a one-way deal worth $575,000, according to ESPN Chicago’s Scott Powers.

Cumsikey got the deal and was almost immediately put on waivers to go spend some time with the Rockford IceHogs. A big part of that is not using a roster spot on him, since, as Mark Lazerus notes, Cumiskey is injured and won’t be ready to return to action for a few weeks.

He spent all of training camp on a PTO with Chicago and was eventually re-assigned to AHL Rockford training camp on a PTO as well.

Cumiskey played for Chicago last season as well, on a two-way deal that had the unusually high AHL salary of $400,000. The 28-year-old defender played seven games for the Blackhawks last season, scoring no points while averaging just 13:18 of ice time.

That along with nine playoff games was, however, enough to get his name on the Stanley Cup, even though 14 games in net with seven wins and a .936 Sv% wasn’t enough for goaltender Antti Raanta to get his name engraved on the chalice.
