The Calgary Flames got spanked by the Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday to the tune of 8 to 2 for the Red Wings, so it would be easy to chalk up any complaints from Flames head coach Glen Gulutzan as sour grapes.

That being said the Flames head coach actually made a very salient point after the game when he criticized the decision from the National Hockey League officiating crew to give Flames forward Matthew Tkachuk a major penalty for spearing.

Tkachuk absolutely did deliver a shot to the ankle of Detroit Red Wings bruiser Luke Witkowski as Witkowski was being led off the ice by the NHL officials, however to suggest that shot was a spear would be ridiculous. Gulutzan appeared to think so as well:

"I’m still searching for the spear. I don’t know, if the first little tap on the ankle is a spear then, oof, I guess I’ve misjudged this game for the last 25 years. I’m searching for it. I can’t find it."

The overreaction from the NHL officials is understandable given that the incident resulted in a brawl between both teams, if you missed it you can watch it here, however there is no disputing the fact that Gulutzan's criticism of the officials is legitimate.
