The Thomas Vanek experiment has been a complete failure to this point. Even the most die hard Wild fan has to admit that Vanek has drastically underachieved when we consider he signed a three year $19.5 million dollar deal with the Wild. In fact Vanek has made more of a splash off the ice then on it, as allegations of money laundering surfaced earlier this months, allegations related to a previous incident involving a Western New York sports gambling ring. Wild Head Coach Mike Yeo has had an up close look at Vanek this season and he knows that changes need to be made to get Vanek producing at the level they expect of him. Here's what coach Yeo had to say to NHL.com:
“We have to get him [Vanek] going,” sad Yeo, “Skill guys have to play with skill players. I think we’ve talked a lot this year about how with Charlie we think there’s another level to his game.”
He is of course referring to Charlie Coyle, a player that Yeo has relied on heavily this season when it comes to giving other players a spark in production. The full line will consist of Vanek, Coyle and Jason Zucker. The Wild are also hoping to get more production from Vanek on the power play, the Wild currently ranked 28th in the league with the man advantage. Vanek led the NHL is power play goals back in the 08-09 season. Only time will tell if this experiment can be salvaged.
