The hockey world lost one of its youngest and most beloved fans this week, and the outpouring of grief has been immense.

Mavrik Turnbull, a three-year-old boy from Prince George, British Columbia, passed away on the night of Monday, July 6, after a courageous battle with Stage 4 high-risk neuroblastoma, an aggressive form of childhood cancer. His family confirmed that he died peacefully at Canuck Place Children's Hospice in Vancouver, with both his mother and father at his side.

"Mavrik took his last breath last night," the family wrote in a Facebook post, "at Canuck Place with Derek and me beside him. All day he had lots of snuggles with family. We spent some time together as a family before he left for the funeral home."

Mavrik had been transferred to the Canuck Place Hospice Centre on June 11 after his condition worsened following treatment in Boston. During his final weeks at the facility, hockey players visited him, and he spent precious time surrounded by loved ones.

The little boy had become a fixture within the Prince George Cougars organization. He joined the team on the ice during practices, sat on the bench with players during warmups, and played mini sticks with the guys in the locker room. He celebrated his third birthday at the Cougars' season opener against the Winterhawks at CN Centre last September, riding on his father Derek's shoulders for a better view of the action.

The Cougars paid tribute in an emotional statement. "Whether he was on the ice with the team during practice, hanging out on the bench with the players in warm-up, or playing mini-sticks with the guys, Mav was a beloved part of the Cougars family," the team wrote. "His positive spirit, infectious smile, and love for the game of hockey were an inspiration to us all."

The Vancouver Giants also shared their condolences publicly.

Mavrik's family has begun organizing a celebration of life in Prince George. Fittingly, they hope to hold the event at one of the city's hockey rinks to honor the sport he adored.

Beyond the memorial, the Turnbull family plans to establish Mavrik's Legacy Foundation with remaining funds from their fundraising efforts. The foundation's goals include supporting other families dealing with childhood cancer, improving medical resources for children in the Prince George area, and sponsoring a hockey player each year in Mavrik's memory.

"We feel the need in the North and Prince George specifically for oncology care and better supports and services," the family wrote, "as well as celebrating and honouring Mavrik for years to come."

The hockey community continues to rally around the Turnbull family, proving once again that the bonds forged around the game extend far beyond the rink. Here at Hockey Feed, we send them our deepest condolences and keep them in our thoughts and prayers.
