He'll have to wait for his 1st NHL goal.
Toronto Maple Leafs forward Bobby McMann appeared to have scored his first goal in the National Hockey League last night against the Detroit Red Wings, redirecting the puck with his skate off defenseman Olli Maata past goaltender Ville Husso just 58 seconds into the contest.
However, it wasn't meant to be. Officials quickly reviewed the goal and ruled that McMann was guilty of a distinct kicking motion; the goal was reversed and the score remained deadlocked at 0-0. What was originally a fast start for the Leafs quickly changed into a 2-0 deficit at the hands of the host Red Wings en route to a 4-1 final.
And McMann's teammates certainly felt bad for him in the dressing room afterward.
"I'm so sad," goaltender Ilya Samsonov explained. "Your teammate scores his first goal in the NHL, you're happy for him... He will score next game."
Meanwhile, McMann's father Cecil was in attendance along with several other Leafs players fathers, who instantly began celebrating with him.
“The boys were hugging me,” Cecil McMann said during the game's 1st intermission on what appeared to be his son's 1st NHL goal. “I thought it was in. I thought it went off their defender … It’s hockey. Listen, Bobby’s here with the Leafs, it’s an unlikely situation. We’re happy. If it was your son, you would be happy.”
“It’s so unlikely, but if you look at the enormity of the work that kid has put in, it’s a special moment for him,” McMann said of his son making the NHL at age 26. “He’s done all this. He’s dragged his dad along. It’s not me. I don’t want to brag about my son.”
McMann and the Leafs will have a chance to get back on track tomorrow night when they take on the League leading Boston Bruins at TD Garden.
