Heartbreaking news strikes the Hughes family

Unfortunate news has struck the Hughes family.

Quinn Hughes shared a heartfelt tribute on social media, posting a photo alongside his grandmother with a simple but emotional message.

The Minnesota Wild defenseman, 26, used his Instagram Story to honor his grandmother Penny Weinberg, who passed away on Tuesday, July 28, at the age of 83. According to her obituary, Weinberg had been battling a recent illness.

"Love you," Hughes wrote alongside a heart and dove emoji, sharing a recent picture of himself with his grandmother.

Weinberg's obituary described her as someone who radiated kindness, grace, and quiet strength from an early age. Those qualities, it noted, remained central to who she was throughout her life and left a lasting impact on everyone who crossed her path.

The remembrance also emphasized that family was her greatest source of happiness. She was celebrated as a devoted wife, selfless mother, proud grandmother and great-grandmother, and a loyal friend. Her husband, Warren, preceded her in death.

Before her passing, Weinberg was able to witness a remarkable family achievement. Both Quinn and his brother Jack, a forward with the New Jersey Devils, earned gold medals as members of Team USA at the 2026 Winter Olympics.

Jack Hughes netted the decisive goal in that contest despite having several teeth knocked out by a high stick earlier in the game. Weinberg joked at the time that she hoped he would get them repaired. He did, weeks later.

Quinn and Jack's younger brother, Luke, is also on the Devils' roster, making the Hughes family one of the most prominent hockey families in the sport today. They are unfortunately dealing with terrible loss at this time.

The Hughes family is now focused on honouring Weinberg's memory and the values she instilled in a family that continues to make its mark both on and off the ice.
