On the surface, the 2026 NHL General Managers meetings, held this week in Manalapan, Florida, focused on the post-Olympic buzz from Milan 2026, planning for the 2028 World Cup of Hockey, and debating potential rule changes. But there was so much more on the table, including one hot topic that got NHL commissioner Gary Bettman irate with one of the general managers.

According player agent Allan Walsh, who loves a good controversy involving Bettman, there was a heated exchange between the commissioner and one of the league’s GMs over the standards on head shots to players.

“Hearing there was a heated exchange between Gary and a NHL GM during the GM meetings. The GM said to Gary that it appears the league has relaxed its standards on head shots. Gary was irate with the question and blasted the GM.

“This GM has my vote for GM of the Year,” added Walsh.

While it was put out there that Bettman remains defiant about a new playoff format and the review of goalie interference calls, not a lot what said about this reported heated conversation on players’ Safety.

Again what the subject of Anaheim Ducks’ Radko Gudas’ five-game suspension for kneeing Auston Matthews of the Toronto Maple Leafs came up, Bettman came to the defense of senior vice president of player safety, George Parros.

“George always takes criticism. Most of it (is) unfair,” Bettman said. “He goes through a very detailed process of analyzing any situation that comes before him. He shared the process with the managers as a group, and I believe they were satisfied with how thorough and diligent he was. And briefly, if you look at the precedent, he was certainly within the range,” Bettman said.

But very little was added on the subject of head shots and why Bettman was so reportedly irate with the questions.

More could emerge from this in the coming days, with the most popular question being: which GM dared to call out Bettman?
