Not every member of Team USA’s Olympic hockey squads made the trip to D.C.
Despite a viral video showing the United States men’s Olympic hockey team seemingly agreeing in unison to visit the White House after Tuesday’s State of the Union address, not all gold medal winners accepted the invitation of President Donald Trump.
Forwards Jake Guentzel, Kyle Connor, Brock Nelson, defenseman Jackson Lacombe and goaltender Jake Oettinger opted out of the trip to Washington, D.C. No other men’s team members have been reported to decline the invitation.
“I’m just getting ready. We play on Wednesday,” Connor commented.
Scheduling conflicts were cited. Their NHL teams are set to resume play Wednesday, making attendance logistically difficult.
Meanwhile, the U.S. women’s hockey team, also gold medal winners at the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics, declined the invitation as a group. They cited “the timing and previously scheduled academic and professional commitments following the Games” as their reason. Some observers have also pointed to the tone of President Trump’s call to the men’s team, during which he joked, “We’re going to have to bring the women’s team, you do know that? … I do believe I probably would be impeached,” as a potential factor in the women’s decision.
Connor was also asked about Trump’s joke and answered to Murat Ates:
“I don’t really have any thoughts on that. There’s so many things happening. We just won the gold medal and things are going on so I don’t really remember what he said. It’s such a whirlwind, just celebrating.”
While the decision to decline isn’t necessarily political, it highlights the ongoing tension between professional obligations and ceremonial appearances for Olympic athletes. For the men and women who turned down the invitation, the priority remains honoring their commitments to their teams and schedules following a historic and physically demanding Olympic run.
Whether in D.C. or on the ice, Team USA’s athletes continue to draw attention for their remarkable performances and the choices they make off it.
