Dubas opens up on the Penguins’ superstar and what’s next for the team.
In his latest piece for The Athletic, insider Pierre LeBrun dove into the state of the Pittsburgh Penguins. From the club’s unexpected start to the 2025-26 season to the long-term future of franchise star Sidney Crosby.
And while we’ve heard all the trade rumours from the past year and while speculation naturally grows whenever a superstar approaches the later years of his career, LeBrun makes one thing clear: general manager Kyle Dubas isn’t pushing Crosby anywhere.
The Penguins’ GM spoke candidly about Crosby’s future and shut down any notion that he would try to move on from the captain before Crosby decided it himself.
“It’s not like I would go to Sid and say I want him out,” Dubas told LeBrun.
“No, I would never. He’s got two years, this year and next year, left on his contract. And I just think that if we continue to take the right steps and we continue to win, that’s the great solution to everything in sports. You just have to win.”
For Dubas, the focus isn’t on life after Crosby, but it’s on maximizing the time he has with Crosby. As long as No. 87 is still producing (and he very much is), the Penguins remain committed to building around him, not phasing him out.
And so the message from management is clear at the moment: Crosby stays until Crosby decides otherwise.
