Marco Sturm, one of the player acquired by the Bruins in the Joe Thornton trade, has been name both head coach and general manager of the Germany national hockey team according to NBC sports. Sturm announced his retirement from pro hockey last January after 15 seasons in the NHL. He last played in the league back in 2011-2012 with the Florida Panthers. The 36-year-old had eight 20-goal or more seasons in the NHL. He recorded 242 goals and 245 assists in his 938-game career mostly spent with the Sharks and the Bruins. He also played for the Kings, the capitals, the Canucks and the Panthers at the end of his career. He last played in the DEL in 2012-2013 with the Cologne Sharks. According to NBC sports, Sturm is thrilled about his new role with the Germany national team:
“I’m very proud that the DEB [German hockey federation] gives me the huge responsibility and I’m really immensely looking forward to this challenging and exciting task I will work on with huge motivation,” Sturm said, per the IIHF website. “Together we want to go the next step with German ice hockey.”
