There is a strong sense that Brad Treliving will be named the next general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs shortly. In the meantime, only questions remain on what other changes will occur in Toronto and of course, several are linked to head coach Sheldon Keefe. We all know that when a new GM takes over, he usually likes to bring in his own preferred head coach, which would mean Keefe’s time would be coming to an end.

However on Wednesday, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman hinted at the growing sense that Treliving is open to having Keefe stay on as head coach.

“From what I understand he told them that he’s more than willing to consider keeping him,” Friedman told host JD Bunkis on Sportsnet 590 The Fan on Wednesday.

When team president Brendan Shanahan let go of Kyle Dubas as general manager on May 19, he was asked about the status of other personnel including Keefe. He simply replied that those decisions should come from the new GM. Friedman added that Treliving doesn’t know Keefe and is looking to get to know him before making that decision.

“From what I understand, Treliving is open-minded on that issue. He’s prepared to meet and talk with Keefe and see if it makes sense,” Friedman said.

Treliving’s hire by the Maple Leafs should be announced later today as a news conference expected for Thursday, according to Friedman.

We will be a step closer to knowing what the future holds in Toronto for Keefe.
