A young hockey captain has lost his life far too soon, and what makes the news all the more tragic is that it appears to have been through no fault of his own.

On Saturday, WTNH News 8 reporter Caroline LeCour reported that law enforcement had confirmed the passing of University of New Haven's Men's Hockey captain Ryan O’Shea, he was only 21 years old.

O'Shea was reportedly traveling Southbound on I-9 on Friday when he and his vehicle were suddenly struck by another vehicle traveling in the wrong direction. O'Shea's vehicle was struck head on and, while 4 others were injured in the crash, he lost his life as a result.

"Ryan was an avid sports fan, and he was always ready to have a sports-related conversation," said academic adviser, Lorenzo Boyd of O'Shea as per The Charger Bulletin. "Ryan wanted to go into public service in order to help others. He was engaging in the classroom and will be missed greatly."

O'Shea was studying to pursue a career in criminal justice and had even recently interned with the NYPD over the summer in his efforts to pursue those dreams. Not only did the world lose a leader on the ice, but one who was looking to be a force for good as well. He was just one semester away from graduation.

My most sincere condolences go out to Ryan O'Shea's family, friends and teammates.
