Bob McKenzie one of the most well respected insiders in the hockey business made some very interesting comments during an intermission segment on Wednesday night. McKenzie was discussing the possibility of a free agent market that would have the top stars being coaches instead of players. McKenzie mentioned two names in particular that will have you raising your eyebrows, Claude Julien and Todd McLellan. The names are interesting because they are both long tenured coaches, two of the most respected in the NHL, and most importantly still currently at their post. This would leave one to believe McKenzie expects them both to be fired at some point during the offseason, and while it may seem crazy at first it's not all that surprising. In McLellan's case this will be the first time in his 20 year coaching history that he will miss the playoffs. Add to that the fact that there has been very public drama between players on his roster and upper management and a change may be the best thing for him. McLellan publicly admitted earlier this seaso nthat he wasn't happy with his club.
“I know that the team hasn’t performed to the level that any of us are happy with — not just ownership and management, but also coaches and players aren’t happy with the results.”
Julien's case is more straight forward, ownership and management have both made it clear that they will make drastic changes if the Bruins fail to make the post season. Given Ottawa's current run of success as well as injuries to players like Dougie Hamilton, and it's becoming more and more likely that the Bruins will indeed miss the post season. Claude Julien could be on his way along with Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli. You add a potential of a free agent Mike Babcock to the mix and you could have yourself 3 of the very best coaches in the NHL up for grabs this summer.
