The National Hockey League has been cracking down on slashing and face-off penalties, and even went overboard on the matter in the preseason - a decision that was greatly criticized by fans and players around the league.

Then, several coaches, notably Toronto Maple Leafs' Mike Babcock, reacted to the board of governors passing the new rule stating teams will suffer a two-minute minor penalty if a coach challenges that a play is offsides and is wrong.

But according to New York Post' Brett Cyrgalis, the NHL has not said anything "declarative towards their biggest on-ice problem — headshots."

The NHL has reacted to one of the craziest situation on ice last year, when Ottawa Senators defenseman Marc Methot’s fingertip was slashed off his hand, but what about when Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby missed most of two years because of concussions, then suffered another one last year.

Clearly the rules on headshots are not stern enough and Cyrgalis hopes that the NHL misstep will be corrected in the regular calendar.

With George Parros taking over for Stephane Quintal at the top of the Department of Player Safety, we have seen some encouraging decisions when he suspende New York Rangers' Andrew Desjardins for two games for his headshot on the New Jersey Devils’ Miles Wood.

Players and fans are hoping he will be as stern in the actual season.
