He survived and wrote a text about it for Slate magazine. Peter Jakubowicz recalls how he dropped dead during a hockey game following a heart attack and was saved by a rival player. When he woke up in the ICU of the Legacy Emanuel Medical Center in Portland, unaware of what had happened, he was told “You’re in the ICU. You had a heart attack during your hockey game last night. A player on the other team saved your life.”

Peter was able to watch his death as it was caught on video. He saw how “A player on the other team, No. 12 in pink, skates to me. He’s checking my carotid pulse 25 seconds after my collapse.”

“No. 12 does CPR. On screen, the motions look smooth, fluid. He pushes down and lets up on my chest over and over, rapidly, pivoting on his knees, skates lifting off the ice each time he compresses my rubber sternum.

A man in street clothes runs across the ice and helps with my resuscitation.”

Peter was then placed on a gurney, and carted toward the rink’s exit. After his recovery, he returned to play hockey and met with his heroes ; No. 12: Steve, a paramedic for 30 years with Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue and Derek, the second man in the movie and a former EMT.

A huge Boston Bruins fan, Peter says he “went down wearing No. 37, like Patrice Bergeron, the toughest player ever.” There was some solace. And even though his Bruins were shockingly eliminated from the postseason, his heart isn’t broken. It’s alive.
