Tragic news. He was out to have some fun in the offseason and was shot and killed while walking back to his hotel.
This is the kind of news that is not only hard to report, but mostly hard to comprehend. Global News has shared that a Canadian tourist visiting Wisconsin for a golf trip died in tragic and frightening circumstances around 12:08 a.m. local time on Wednesday in Sheboygan Falls.
Police found the victim, Giovanni Michael “Mike” Robinson, 32, suffering from a gunshot wound and despite life-saving measures and medical attention, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
When putting the story together, Global News was informed by sources that Robinson was a former player in the Ontario Hockey League.
According to his Hockey Database profile, he also played for Hannover Scorpions, at the time in the Deutsche Eishockey Liga, in Germany.
It is believed that Robinson was shot by an unknown individual driving a vehicle. No suspect or motive has been identified.
“The motive behind the shooting is unclear. The suspect vehicle is only described as a small, dark colored SUV,” police explained. “To maintain the integrity of the ongoing investigation, limited details will be released at this time.”
Robinson had just become a father in August, and was out just visiting the area from Canada for a golf trip for some well-deserved time off.
The last time Robinson’s family heard from him was a few hours prior when the former hockey forward sent them a photo celebrating his first-ever hole-in-one at a golf course.
“That phone call is just playing in my head. It’s one of the last joyous phone calls that I’ll ever get to share with my best friend,” said his brother Jacob in an interview with CTV News. “I just told him how proud I was of him. He FaceTimed his baby, who’s only five weeks old, and shared that moment with her.”
Our thoughts and prayers got out to all of Robinson’s family and friends, especially the beautiful baby girl he’ll never get to see grow up.
