The NHL and Team Canada speak out after the unthinkable tragedy in Tumbler Ridge
The National Hockey League released a moving statement Wednesday morning expressing its condolences following Tuesday’s tragic school shooting in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia.
Nine people were killed and more than two dozen injured after violence erupted at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School. Authorities confirmed that several victims were found inside the school, while others were discovered at a nearby residence believed to be connected to the incident. The suspect was later found deceased inside the school. Police have indicated they may never fully determine a motive.
In its statement, the NHL extended support to the victims, their families, and the broader community. Team Canada also issued a statement at the Milan Cortina Olympics on Wednesday
“We are heartbroken by the news of the horrific school shooting that occurred in British Columbia. Our thoughts are with the families who have lost loved ones, those who are injured, and the entire Tumbler Ridge community. Team Canada stands with everyone affected as they navigate difficult days ahead,” the statement said.
The Vancouver Canucks, along with other NHL teams, also joined in to share their heartbreak and support to the devastated community.
Hockey holds a deep connection in communities across British Columbia, including small towns like Tumbler Ridge, where local arenas often serve as gathering places in difficult times.
While the league’s message was brief, it echoed the broader wave of support that has poured in from across the country, including from Prime Minister Mark Carney and numerous public figures.
As the investigation continues, the focus in Tumbler Ridge has shifted toward supporting survivors, honoring those lost, and helping a shaken community begin the long process of healing.
In moments like this, even the hockey world pauses, standing in solidarity with those facing unimaginable grief.
