A sad day for the sport of hockey.
The hockey world was left stunned on Friday night when it was announced that legendary National Hockey League forward Clark Gillies had passed away at just 67 years of age. The news came as a shock to many as Gillies appeared to be in good health, and great spirits, just a few short months ago with the Hockey Hall of Famer even making an appearance during the Islanders playoff run in the summer of 2021 by smashing a beer can on his head during a playoff game.
Unfortunately appearances can at times be deceiving and Gillies has now moved on to the great big hockey rink in the sky, joining the ranks of many other NHL legends that we will never see again. As you would expect when such a monumental figure in the sport moves on from this world it has produced a seismic reaction throughout the sport of hockey with thousands and thousands of fans, former players, and NHL personalities reacting to his surprising death.
The Islanders, who retired Gillies #9 jersey, had a beautiful message to honor his passing.
Gillies also briefly played for the Buffalo Sabres at the end of his career and they too commemorated his passing.
It wasn't just the teams he played for that came out and showed him respect however, the Edmonton Oilers who were frequently on the wrong side of Gillies physical playing style also paid tribute to this legend of the sport.
New York Islanders forward Matt Martin struggled to contain the emotion in his voice when he spoke of just how much Gillies meant to him personally.
Butch Goring, who played with Gillies, did a terrific job of maintaining his composure on the broadcast when he spoke about the passing of his friend.
Barry Trotz spoke of just how much Gillies meant to the organization during his media availability.
NHL commissioner Gary Bettman also issued a statement following the news.
Former referee and player Paul Stewart offered up a take that perfectly sums up what a frightening player Gillies was and what a wonderful teammate he could be at the same time.
As I said there have also been thousands of fan reactions, most notably from the Islanders fan base where he was a revered figure still to this day, and each and every one of those speaks to what a tremendous icon the sport of hockey has lost.
