Huge blow to Evander Kane’s NHL future as new destination emerges

Evander Kane has been one of the most recognizable power forwards of his generation, a physical force who spent years anchoring lineups in Winnipeg, Buffalo, San Jose, Edmonton and last season with Vancouver. But as the offseason drags on without an NHL deal, the veteran player’s future could be headed in a very different direction.

According to Sport-Express reporter Mikhail Zislis, Ak Bars Kazan of the KHL has reportedly shown interest in bringing Kane to Russia.

Kane wrapped up last season with the Canucks, posting 31 points across 71 games. It was a modest return for a player who once commanded a $7 million cap hit, though he still demonstrated he could contribute at the NHL level.

His career resume speaks for itself. Over 1,001 NHL games, Kane has accumulated 648 points while playing prominent roles on multiple teams. He has long been a player who generates attention both on and off the ice. That’s probably why NHL teams are reluctant to add him to their roster…

No agreement has been reached with the Russian club, and interest from the KHL does not automatically signal the end of Kane's time in North America. Players have fielded overseas inquiries before only to circle back to NHL opportunities.

That said, the longer Kane sits without an NHL contract, the more plausible a move abroad becomes. The market for veteran wingers on the wrong side of 35 is rarely forgiving, and teams tend to fill their rosters quickly once training camps approach.

I mean I get that Kane remains a player with over a thousand games of experience and a skill set that could still be valuable in the right situation, but it has to be for the right price, and honestly, he’d need to clean up his act and perhaps, take responsibility for his wrongdoings.

The waiting game continues for now. Whether Kane finds another NHL home or begins a new chapter overseas in Kazan, the coming weeks should bring clarity on what could be one of the more surprising transitions of the offseason.
