Huge change to draft lottery being tossed around by the league!

A lot has been reported on the recent NHL Board of Governors, but this has to be the most unexpected news of all. On Thursday, Chris Johnston revealed on Insider Trading on TSN how a novel idea being kicked around when it comes to the NHL draft and its lottery.

“It’s the idea of potentially having the teams at the bottom of the standings play a series of games for the right to draft No. 1 overall. This, of course, would replace the NHL Draft Lottery.”

Since 2021, the NHL dropped the number of lottery draws from three to two, ensuring that the team with the worst record in the NHL selects no later than third overall if it loses the first or second lottery draws. Also, the number of spots that a team can move up if it wins the lottery was limited to 10 picks.

And no team is able to move up the draft board by winning a lottery more than two times in a five-year period.

This new idea would send all of these rules out the window.

However, Johnston doubts teams and managements will get on board.

“I don’t think it has a good chance of taking hold, but it certainly was something that a few people were discussing.”

We get why! That would be a crazy tournament. And imagine, this year, the trophy would be Connor Bedard!
