Team USA was on top during the first period of the semifinal matchup against Canada at the World Junior Championship on Wednesday night.

The Canadians got back into it however, as Adam Fantilli gave his team the lead for the first time in the second frame of the intense contest.

Moments later, Jackson Blake thought he had the tying goal, however, but Canada’s goalie interference challenge says no and overturned the tally.

While fans in the building and at home watching from any of the 10 provinces in Canada were ecstatic, many fans and pundits wondered online if the call was right, with some extremely adamant that the goal should never have been overturned by the officials.

Amongst the upset parties of this controversial call is former NHLer and now host of the Spittin Chichlets podcast Ryan Whitney, who called the decision “one of the worst calls in hockey history.”

The decision only seemed to pump the Canadian roster even more with forward Joshua Roy giving his teammates a two-goal lead late in the second period.

However, the controversial call is almost trending as much as projected first overall pick Connor Bedard...

During the intermission, veteran insider Bob McKenzie explained the IIHF standard is a little tighter than the NHL especially where the blue paint is concerned. Though I'm not sure that will be enough to make American fans think otherwise...
