This has already cost Montreal multiple times this season… it can’t happen again Saturday night!
A strange and recurring problem inside the Montreal Canadiens’ home rink is once again becoming a talking point ahead of a critical Game 6.
According to reporting from Le Journal de Montréal, the Canadiens have now been burned for a third time in 2026 by an unusual bounce off the Zamboni door area in the corner of the ice at the Bell Centre: a flaw that continues to create unpredictable deflections behind the net.
The most recent incident came during Game 4 of the Eastern Conference series against the Buffalo Sabres, when goaltender Jakub Dobeš was beaten on a play that started as a routine puck battle.
Buffalo forward Tage Thompson was simply attempting to send the puck deep into the zone, but it instead struck part of the Zamboni gate structure and redirected sharply toward the net. The unexpected bounce caught Dobeš off guard, with the puck striking him before ending up in the back of the goal.
It is not the first time this exact issue has surfaced at the Bell Centre this season, as the newspaper pointed out.
On April 7, Dobeš was again in net when a similar deflection off the same area created a dangerous chance, though he was able to scramble back and prevent a goal against the Florida Panthers. Earlier in the season, prospect Jacob Fowler also saw a puck take an awkward carom off the same structure, leading to a goal by the Detroit Red Wings’ Lucas Raymond.
The repeated nature of the issue has raised questions inside the organization, with players now clearly aware of the unpredictable bounces coming from that section of the rink.
While arena quirks are nothing new in hockey, the timing of these incidents, and the fact they have directly impacted goals against, is making it an increasingly uncomfortable storyline as Montreal heads into a must-win Game 6.
