Huge regret looms in Edmonton after Deadline moves...

Deadline decisions could come back to haunt the Oilers as the playoff race heats up

Edmonton was aggressive leading up to the trade deadline, addressing key areas of need. They bolstered their blue line by acquiring Connor Murphy, added centre depth with Jason Dickinson, and earlier in December made a splash for goaltender Tristan Jarry in a significant trade with the Pittsburgh Penguins. On paper, it looked like the Oilers were positioning themselves for a serious playoff push.

But the numbers tell a different story. Rory Boylen of Sportsnet points out, “If the playoffs were today, the Oilers likely wouldn’t even be starting the goalie they traded for during this season. Jarry has an .862 save percentage in 13 games with the team - 30 points worse than off-season wild-card pickup Connor Ingram.”

Despite speculation that Edmonton look to target names like Jordan Binnington or Sergei Bobrovsky ahead of the trade deadline on Friday, the Oilers had already made one goalie trade this season and had other roster needs to address.

Now, questions linger: can Jarry turn it around, or will Ingram emerge as the more reliable option? To make things worse last night, Ingram was injured in a collision with Colorado Avalanche’s Nathan MacKinnon, just to cast more doubt on the goalie situation in Edmonton.

With solid goaltending critical for a deep playoff run, the Oilers could be left wishing they had made a bolder move between the pipes before the deadline.

I guess only time will tell…
