Will it make or break the trade?
There are a lot of teams getting into the mix to land San Jose Sharks forward Timo Meier ahead of the March 3rd trade deadline, with the St. Louis Blues joining the sweepstakes, however, there is a sense that the New Jersey Devils remain the front-runners to acquire the star forward.
While it was recently reported that talks have intensified lately between the Sharks and Devils, there are now reports of a huge sticking point in the negotiations.
According to Robert Aitken Jr, a source familiar with the situation informed him that the Devils “continue to be in talks to acquire Timo Meier from San Jose before the March 3 deadline.” However, “a big sticking point is that the Sharks continue to ask for Dawson Mercer as part of a return.”
Mercer was New Jersey’s first round pick in 2020 and has improved mightily with the Devils, especially when it comes to his two-way game. He’s been quite productive lately, which surely makes him more of a target for the Sharks, but Mercer is believed to be a key contributor for the Devils moving forward.
If the Devils remain unwilling to move Mercer in order to get Meier, the Sharks might shift their focus to other interested teams that might be willing to pay a high price to get the talented forward on their roster ahead of the deadline and postseason.
Though for now Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman believes the Devils still have the edge.
“Everyone seems to think here that New Jersey is not only the most likely place that he ends up if you’re handicapping it, but what somebody said to me is they’re probably the place that needs him the most.”
Stay tuned…
