Roster limits force Pittsburgh to move a player following Friday’s major trade.
The Pittsburgh Penguins made waves earlier on Friday morning when they traded goaltender Tristan Jarry and forward Sam Poulin to the Edmonton Oilers in return for netminder Stuart Skinner, veteran defenseman Brett Kulak and a 2029 second-round pick in a blockbuster move.
Hours following the huge transaction, the Penguins had to move a player down on waivers in order to get to the NHL limit of 23 active players. The team confirmed that, in a corresponding move to the trade, first rounder defenseman Matt Dumba is the one hitting waiver.
The veteran blue liner has one goal and three points in 11 games with the Penguins this season. He is a pending unrestricted free agent, carrying a cap hit of $3.75 million.
Kulak has put up two assists in 31 games this season. He is also a pending UFA, carrying a cap hit of $2.75 million this season.
With the addition of Kulak in Friday’s earlier trade, it appears Dumba is the odd man out for the Penguins and will likely be headed for AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton if he clears waivers.
