Ottawa’s sudden roster chatter appears aimed at shifting attention from the locker room controversy.
The Ottawa Senators are last in the Atlantic Division, but they sit just six points back of the second Wild-Card spot, but it feels like they have way more important things to handle at this time.
The insane rumours emerging last week on the state of the dressing room, a rumour that essentially stated that goalie Linus Ullmark’s teammates had kicked him off the team for exposing some of his teammates for cheating on their wives.
In particular captain Brady Tkachuk was implicated in the rumors, leading him to make a strong denial to the media. He called the rumor ‘made up bullshit’ and admonished media members for spreading a false narrative.
The Senators, who managed a win over the last-place Vancouver Canucks last night, might have found a way to remove the attention from that wild rumour and put it on another speculation on the trade block.
According to insider Darren Dreger, Sens team president and general manager Steve Staios is using the next stretch of games to evaluate what his approach should be leading up to the March 6 trade deadline. And could even go after one of the top trade candidates out there, Kiefer Sherwood.
“I look at Kiefer Sherwood , who’s a pending unrestricted free agent for the Vancouver Canucks . I see a fit with the Ottawa Senators , but first the Sens have to start climbing back into the playoff conversation before the GM gets that aggressive,” Dreger said.”
Since they’ve been struggling earlier in the season, the Canucks have been shopping several veteran pieces, including pending UFAs like Sherwood, along with Evander Kane and Teddy Blueger as well. Sherwood, who has missed the last three games due to an undisclosed injury, still has recorded 7 goals and six assists for 23 points in 44 games this season while averaging 17:32 of ice time per game, and is getting a lot of attention from different suitors. He is finishing up the final year of a two-year, $3 million deal that pays him $1.5 million annually.
While Ottawa is out of the playoff race for now, a monster trade for a guy like Sherwood could immediately take the heat off the dressing room cheating scandal and bring the focus back on the ice, and where it matters.
