Insider Pierre LeBrun drops major detail on the situation:
A new report from Pierre LeBrun is adding even more intrigue to the future of Connor McDavid in Edmonton.
Following another disappointing playoff exit for the Edmonton Oilers a few weeks ago, speculation surrounding McDavid’s long-term future has intensified across the hockey world. But according to LeBrun, the real concern for Oilers fans may not be an immediate departure this summer.
Instead, the crucial turning point could arrive one year from now.
McDavid remains under contract through the 2027-28 season, and LeBrun believes the most likely scenario is that the Oilers captain gives the organization at least one more season to prove it can still contend for a Stanley Cup. However, if Edmonton flames out again or fails to show meaningful progress, the entire situation could dramatically change.
“If the Oilers flame out in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs this spring, I can’t discount how he will feel about that,” LeBrun explained, questioning how another disappointing ending could impact McDavid’s confidence in the organization’s direction.
Importantly, LeBrun does not believe McDavid would simply walk away in free agency and leave Edmonton with nothing in return. If extension talks were to collapse down the road, a blockbuster trade before his contract expires is viewed as the more realistic outcome.
That possibility alone is enough to send shockwaves through the NHL.
LeBrun also noted that if McDavid were ever to seriously consider leaving, several major-market contenders could emerge as potential destinations, including the Los Angeles Kings, New York Rangers, Chicago Blackhawks, and Dallas Stars.
For now, though, all eyes are on what may become the most important season of the McDavid era in Edmonton.
