Coming off a disappointing 2022-23 season, the Calgary Flames were expected by most fans to undergo some serious changes during the offseason, however, they’ve had only managed to trade Tyler Toffoli to the New Jersey Devils in exchange for Yegor Sharangovich and a third round pick in 2023, who turned out to be Aydar Suniev.

Otherwise, the Flames have been quiet. While some fans may be worried that Calgary isn’t working hard to improve for the upcoming season, Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli has revealed that the Flames are busy on an important matter. They are doing their best to keep Elias Lindholm in the team’s future. Seravalli provided an update on pending free agent centre Elias Lindholm on Monday’s new edition of the DFO Rundown podcast, giving fans the latest update in the Lindholm saga.

“Calgary is still making a pitch, still making a push to get Elias Lindholm signed. And I think it’s unfair to say that there’s been significant progress made, but I do think that perhaps the Lindholm camp is listening a bit more intently than they were back when the summer first started. So I think there’s a door open for the Flames to sign Lindholm. And then I think they’re hoping that if Lindholm re-signs and if the team gets off to a better start, that you’re going to see increased buy-in from some of these other guys.”

The Flames have seven prominent players on expiring contract after the 2023-24 season, including Lindholm, Noah Hanifin, Mikael Backlund, Nikita Zadorov, Chris Tanev and Oliver Kylington, who could all become unrestricted free agents on July 1, 2024. Dillon Dube will be a restricted free agent.

Lindholm could be waiting to see how the new head coach and GM fit in and improve the atmosphere in the dressing room as the situation soon became dire with former bench boss Darryl Sutter last year. In the process, the Flames finished just three points out of the final Western Conference wild-card playoff spot.

Seravalli seems confident that the Flames could have been fortunes in 2023-24.

“They believe that they can be a real bounce-back team right into the playoffs next year.”

This may be what keeps Lindholm in Calgary in the future…
