Gavin McKenna was long viewed as the undisputed top name heading into the 2026 NHL Draft, but new developments continue to add layers of uncertainty around the highly touted prospect.

Earlier this year, McKenna made headlines following a January 31 incident that resulted in a felony charge of first-degree aggravated assault. That charge was later dropped after video evidence reportedly showed no intent to cause serious injury. While the legal matter was resolved, it briefly put McKenna under an intense spotlight.

Beyond that situation, reports suggest there are growing questions within scouting circles about aspects of his game and maturity, with some teams reportedly taking a closer look at both his on-ice details and overall demeanor.

Despite the noise, McKenna’s talent remains unquestioned. He is still ranked as NHL Central Scouting’s top North American prospect after posting 15 goals and 51 points in 35 games as a freshman at Penn State. He also impressed internationally with 14 points in seven games at the World Junior Championship for Canada.

However, one recent decision adds another twist. According to TSN’s Darren Dreger, McKenna will not be part of Canada’s roster for the upcoming Men’s World Championship. The decision was made jointly by Hockey Canada and his representatives, with a focus instead placed on preparing for the NHL combine.

Meanwhile, the draft picture in Toronto has shifted dramatically. The Maple Leafs won the 2026 NHL Draft Lottery on Tuesday despite just an 8.5% chance, securing the first overall pick in Buffalo on June 26. The San Jose Sharks jumped to second overall.

With Toronto now on the clock and McKenna’s stock under increased scrutiny, the top of the draft board suddenly feels far less certain than it did just weeks ago.
